My Dark Sister

Death, my dark sister
How I’ve longed to lose you
Hide and no seek

A preposterous endeavor
As we are inextricably bound to each other
Like rainbows and daggers
Like motherhood and the persistence of reality

We’ve come to know each other awfully well
In the intervening years
And developed our familiar
If not easy

Such a weary dance
Filled with silent murmurs
And earthy wisdom
All things

This as-is universe hangs heavy and damp sometimes
And you, Sister, you sit with us still
Dark-eyed and patient
Eternally judgement-free

I hear you in the hiss of time
I find my ease in your company
